CITY WIDE FOOD DRIVE

2008-06-10

6,300 people use food banks every month in the City and County of Peterborough. To help meet this need, Kawartha Food Share is launching their first annual City-Wide Food Drive on Saturday, July 19th.

Kawartha Food Share distributes 75,000 items of food every month to local food banks, agency food cupboards, meal programs and school breakfast clubs. This large-scale City-wide food drive is being run now because the summer is the slowest time of the year for donations. Unfortunately, hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.

"Kawartha Food Share delivers an invaluable service in our community by working to supplying food to those who are hungry." said Mayor Paul Ayotte. He continued to say "The citizens of Peterborough are very generous and I’m hoping everyone can take a moment on July 19th to put a bag of food out to support Kawartha Food Share."

A paper grocery bag will be delivered to every resident by Peterborough This Week on Wednesday, July 16th. Residents are being asked to fill the bag with food and put it out on their front step before 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19th. Volunteers will be travelling throughout the City collecting the bags and delivering them back to Kawartha Food Share. The food items needed the most are: peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna, macaroni & cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, pork & beans, canned soup/stew and rice.

A few more volunteers are still needed for the event. Anyone interested in helping can contact Chris Kawalec at Kawartha Food Share by phone at 745-5377 or by email at chris@kawarthafoodshare.com.

Kawartha Food Share is truly grateful for the support and sponsorship of: Peterborough This Week, The Wolf/980 KRUZ, Lansdowne Place, East Peterborough Lions Club, Dominos Pizza and our volunteers who are helping us run this event.
